The Amazing Cars of Saudi Arabia

Jeddah is called the Paris of the Middle East. Now I know why. Every day, we see Rolls Royce cars, Mercedes Benz, Ferrari's, hummer's, BMW's and Audi's. The car we see the most, and in the strangest colors, is the Porsche.

Here are some of the "cool cars" we were able to capture!

Rolls Royce

Hummer - We have also seen them in neon orange and neon yellow

Vintage Station Wagon

Bentley

Vintage Limo style Suburban

Pegout

Although ladies do not drive here - they can still choose the color of their family SUV. It is very common to see pink and purple cars and SUV's here!

The Culture of Saudi Arabia - From Shopping to Praying to Eating!

So, our first week in Saudi Arabia has come to an end and the new week will start soon, I think. Here are some interesting things that I have learned so far about the culture and lifestyle here:

1. The work week starts on Saturday and ends on Wednesday. So, that means that Thursday and Friday is the weekend. So, since today is Tuesday, that means that the weekend will be here in 2 days. I know, I am still confused about this too.

2. At the malls, most of the kids wear roller skates, use a scooter and some even ride their bikes. The malls are so big here-so I guess this tactic eliminates the "mom, hold me" whining.

3. At the beach, families picnic at night. We drove by and saw families with "camp" fires, roasting their fresh caught fish.

4. People EAT camel meat here! Gross, right? Well, actually, I ate it, thinking that Sohail was lying to me about it being camel. It was actually quite tasty!

5. Stores stay open until midnight here. Some stay open until you are done looking. But others just turn the lights out on you.

6. Stores close during prayer times. I really don't know how to explain this, but for example-we drove up to the gas station and the gas pumps just turned off (the part with the price on it). Prayer time started and we sat at the pump for at least 30 minutes. Prayer time ended-we were able to pump the gas, but the guy pumped it for us. And-it only cost $6.93 to fill up our car!!!!!!!!!!!

7. In restaurants here, there are "family sections" and "single or men's" section. This is also hard to wrap your head around. I am here and don't really completely understand. For example, I walked up to Starbucks in a shopping center. I had to go into the side door for the "family section." I had to wait longer because the men ordering their coffee, on the men's side went first.

8. There are malls everywhere! At least one every mile. Some are even across the street from each other. And, get this-the top floors have arcades and playgrounds (at least the ones that I've been to).

9. The Andalus Mall, has a grocery store in it, on the 3rd floor! That was cool! And-the escalators are not like stairs, but are flat. So, the shopping carts fit on them, all the way down to the 1st floor. That means, that you can roll your cart through the mall!

10. Using toilet paper is not a common practice here. Most homes and public restrooms have a water hose type thing to wash with. Me-I carry tissues in my purse!

That's all for now-I hope you enjoyed reading this!

Pretty Sculptures in Jeddah

These are some things in the median of some of the freeways here. Jeddah is like a drive through museum! These designs of sculptures are so unique. However, beginning in July, some of the sculptures have been removed, in order to transform the roads into freeways.

The lighted Globe Sculpture

Honeycombs?

I have no idea what this one is!

All About Abaya's - The Black Cloak Women Wear in Saudi Arabia

So, what are my thoughts on wearing an abaya? Well, I do not think that it is the easiest to shop in or go on an escalator with, or step up from the curb in. Why? Because it is long. Honestly, wearing the black choir robe looking abaya does not really bother me at all. Every woman wears one here. Its just part of the culture. Phillipino's, British, Pakistani and Americans wear them. These are the ladies that I have noticed, do not necessarily wear the head scarf, though. Sometimes I wear the head scarf and sometimes I do not. When I do not wear it (the head scarf), I almost feel like I am being disrespectful to the culture and society. But, when I have not worn it, its just been because I was feeling hot.

So, the abaya comes in many forms and fashions. Today, when our family was at Baskin Robbins and Starbucks, I saw a woman wearing a navy blue abaya with gold trim and a beige head scarf. I also saw a black abaya with a white head scarf and a navy blue abaya with no head scarf. The one that I have is black and buttons up the front. It goes all the way down to my ankles. I have tripped on it twice. This leads me to make the decision that I have to go abaya shopping, in order to prevent any injuries from tripping. I bet you want to see me wearing an abaya, right? Inshallah, you will, as they say here. One day you will!

Below are some of my secret abaya pictures of other women wearing them. The pictures are at Baskin Robbins. This will be my tactic for taking pictures of the culture-just asking my kids to pose. It worked today!

Day 1 in Jeddah

We woke up at 3pm and then went to the home of our brother & sister in law. As soon as we arrived, I took a jet lag induced nap while the kids played the x-box. We then had dinner and watched tv and visited with family. At 1am we went back home and the kids played until they went to bed at 5:30am They slept all day and then woke up at 5:15pm! I blew up my blow dryer in the outlet..oops, so at 6pm we went to the mall so I could buy a new one. Then we went to ToysRUs. At 9pm we had dinner. I took some interesting pics around town of our first day in Jeddah. I was so excited to see TGI Fridays and Applebee's! At Toys-R-Us, we came across some interesting packaging. Check out the modesty imposed black sharpie drawings on the pool toys!
